Core Canine and Feline Vaccinations

Cat and dog vaccinations are an integral part of your pet's health routine. At Loving Hands Animal Hospital in Chino, our team of dedicated professionals ensures that your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations during your visit.

What are Core Vaccinations?

Dogs and cats are susceptible to a variety of diseases, some of which can be life-threatening. It’s crucial to keep your pet current with their core vaccinations.

Core Vaccinations for Dogs

There are core and non-core vaccinations. Core vaccinations are recommended for all dogs, regardless of whether they are indoor or outdoor pets. The only exception is if your pet has a specific condition that makes vaccination detrimental to their health. Core vaccines for dogs include:

  • Canine distemper virus
  • Canine parvovirus type 2
  • Canine adenovirus type 2
  • Rabies (required by law)

Core vaccinations protect against diseases such as:

  • Distemper
  • Parvovirus
  • Infectious canine hepatitis
  • Rabies

Core Vaccinations for Cats

Like dogs, cats also require core vaccinations:

  • FVRCP (a combination vaccine that protects against feline rhinotracheitis virus/herpesvirus 1 (FVR/FHV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV), and feline panleukopenia (FPV))
  • FeLV (for kittens)
  • Rabies

Core vaccines protect cats from:

  • Feline calicivirus
  • Feline panleukopenia virus
  • Feline viral rhinotracheitis (FHV-1)
  • Rabies

Non-Core Vaccinations

For both adult cats and young kittens, non-core vaccines are recommended as they reduce the risk of other diseases. Non-core vaccines for cats include:

  • Chlamydia felis
  • Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP)
  • Feline leukemia virus (FeLV)
  • Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), also known as Feline AIDS

Veterinary Vaccination Schedule

When you bring your cat or dog for their first visit or an annual check-up, our veterinary services include core vaccinations. Our veterinarian will determine a vaccination schedule based on several factors, including:

  • Age
  • Medical and vaccination history
  • Lifestyle (indoor/outdoor)
  • Likelihood of exposure to pathogens
  • Severity of potential diseases
  • State laws regarding vaccinations
